My attempt at the longest blog post ever! (On my blog only!)

Hello everyone!! Today, I shall attempt my longest blog post ever by talking about my super duper one of a kind work experience at Suntec Convention Centre and the Oriental!:) As usual, ive picked up lots of skills and enjoyed myself very much! Il tell you about my experiences rather than tarnishing the image of these two workplaces! (In other words, il brag about my workplace and experiences rather then curse it!!)

Tuesday...

I got up at 6am, feeling excited cuz its my first day at Suntec:) I got changed and took a train down. Met Vivian and Justina at Cityhall and tried to swallow as much food as possible for fear of dying of starvation halfway by skipping lunch!! We then went to the office area and got dressed into our uniform (Very classy mandrin collar coat material that will definitely tempt anyone to steal!!) They guy toilets are usually empty cuz busloads of aunties throng the whole convention centre!! Believe me, they are no ordinary aunties! they are able, strong, determined, very adorable, helpful, hospitable and ENGLISH EDUCATED!! (How bizzare indeed! I know it is beyond my explanation but since young, I have developed this "fetish" for aunties LOL!!:) I truly respect them in everything they do despite how they are!! they rock man haha!! i know darryl is "auntie-fetish" too heehee!!:)

The work environment is very different between Suntec and the Oriental. Oriental is filled with a large population of teenagers and youths while Suntec is dominated by lots of aunties!! Cheers to Suntec for supporting the "Please hire the old campaign" haha!:) But surprisingly, the administration in Suntec is way more productive and efficient then in the Oriental! Throughout the whole event, many of the aunties were extremely helpful in helping us adapt to the environment and they display a good sense of humour! Sadly, I really pity them cuz they are always scolded by the higher in charge for not doing their job well!!:( I mean come on!! Given their old age, it is really remarkable they are working already so why the heck do you scold them?!!?! I remembered one incident where this young guy (Must be some big shot lah) started shouting at the aunties cuz some customers complained that they were not shown a smile while being served. I understand that we as customers deserve a level of quality service cuz of the money we pay, but waiters and servers are humans too leh, so why are you expecting such a ridiculouly high level of service standard??! somemore from aunties?!?!! Please understand the hell they have to go through by doing the shit some of you feel its ''low-class'' but in my perspective, is the most respectable job in society!! Il show you a scene of a waiter's life and you'll understand!

Wah im sorrie my readers but this "scolding" does not refer to you so please don't feel so bad!! (Unless you're one of those "ridiculous customers" I talked about a few sentences ago!:) Im just feeling mad cuz I dont' see why service providers should be ranked one of the lowest-paid jobs in the working society when they have to work murderous shifts and perform heavily daunting tasks!!! I think must complain to Ministry of manpower already, this is getting out of hand lol!!:)

Okie people! Here are my work experiences for the past three days!

Tuesday...

We gathered at the staff pantry and waited to be assigned to our groups! Fortunately, all three of us were grouped together! We went to the third storey and prepared for our first event: Morning tea-time buffet event for one thousand guests. As usual, I had to clear dishes, walk around and that was about it!! However, during the first hour, I was assigned to a buffet area where apparently no one noticed. So I was literally standing and doing nothing (something which I really hate cuz time flies really slowly like that and its really taxing on my feet!!) Then one of the guest came over and said: "Wah, how come here so much food one?!?! Can all these food be eaten of not?!"

Then I replied," Of course sir! Please help yourself to the food!!"

"Okie okie thanks. This is a blessing man! These people all cock eye one!"

Haha I was thinking whether to reply or not cuz I very much would have wanted to say, " Yah lor yah lor! Stupid bunch of people, got food cannot see, blind man!" But I knew the results would be nasty, so I just smiled and said," please enjoy your food!" Hahahaha!! After the whole event, we had to clear up and prepare for the second event: A four course western lunch for 1000+ guests! I was separated from Vivian and Justina and placed under the supervision of a coordinator by the name of Benson, a very nice and friendly man!! Everything was very synchronised and systematic, extremely efficient! Things all went very smoothly and in my opinion, is very slack compared to the Oriental administration. I enjoyed myself very much and befriended many aunties! We were all dismissed at three sharp (Exactly on the dot!) Fortunately, my feet werent badly bruised up by all the walking!!:) End of day 1! (Enjoyed myself!)

Wednesday...

Luckily, Work today started 10 so I got to sleep a little later! (Woke up at 8!) Went off to meet John and Chu ping (newbies and a guilty bunch of people who owe me employment fees!!! haha jkjk!:) Vivian joined us later cuz she had to attend some stuffs to attend to in the morning! John and Chu Ping were excited cuz it was their first day but I don't think it should be a problem for them other then their HAIR!!! goodness! Luckily they didn't get a trashing from the boss haha!:) Got changed and went to assemble at the HR office. I thought today was supposed to be an in-house event, however I was wrong. Today's event was an OC (outdoor catering) type for the Giant phone company Nokia! (300 guests!) Ive definitely learnt lots of things from this event.

10a.m: started loading tons of wine, ice, food, tables, huge sacks of supposedly dead bodies up lorry after lorry. Ive just worked my ass off for less than two hours and I began sweating like a mad dog. It was insane! Bet i lost lots of weight that day haha! We then took a lorry to market place. On the lorry, one of the guys started smoking, a ridiculously silly action cuz the smell was stuck in the lorry. Already smelling of sweat (at least I was wearing deodourant), i began smelling like a smoker. Dame it dame it dame it, I was so close to scarring his face with the red hot cigarette but then i thought, aiyah, this guy most probably took a few years off his smoke-filled life already so let him be.

Once we arrived, we spent the next few hours in a huge tent located on the car-park roof shifting and ensuring the perfection of the setting. Initially, the tent was cold for the first few minutes and it felt comfortable. but suddenly one by one, the air-con stated breaking down and the whole tent became a sauna. With gamma rays entering the tent and wind being blocked by the plastic sheets, temperatures soared. Trust me, id rather freeze than melt and the heat was too intense for me to bear. Everyone started unbuttoning their shirts (im only refering to the guys please lol) and rolling up thier sleeves. darn those air cons!!!!

Having moved about doing strenous work for almost 5 hours, it was a blessing when I was ordered to stand guard outside the toilet to prevent contractors from using the ''hand towels'' which were placed outside. I know it seemed like a low-life job but it was the only time I could rest!!:) When the whole dinner event kicked off, I was assigned to take care of the second most-important VIP table. I was surprised and honoured cuz usually the most experienced waiters would be assigned to the important tables. Lucky me!! During these moments, life was really stressful cuz I had to juggle between serving cocktail at the bar and serving my guests at the VIP table. I was so glad I didn't drop any glasses cuz that would have been the end of my part-time career!!:) Imagine trying to balance ten empty champagne glasses with one hand and racing more than 200m to the stewarding area, it was nerve-wrecking and I had the strong urge to mess my pants everytime I had to make the trip (Luckily my pants were black lol:)

Everything seemed very hectic but went on smoothly. I also had the privilege to serve Nokia's big boss his desert! hahahaha so cool!!:) Unfortunately, I didn't have the time to get some laxatives to give him a bad stomach cuz I very much am an anti-nokia fan!!!:( After the whole event, we had to shift huge tables and unload everything onto the lorries. By the time we were dismissed, it was already 1.30am. Sway sway for Chu ping and John who had to endure such shit on their first day. I understand if they developed the banquetphobic syndrome haha!!:)

Thursday:

By the time i got home, it was already 3 a.m. My feet were so sore till they were beyond recognition (all blue-black in colour as if gangrene had set in grosss!!!). I managed to catch two hours of sleep before my next shift which starts at 7.am! According to the HR dept, today's event is held in-house, and yes:) they didn't lie! However, today's event is completely opposite of the OC event held yesterday! Instead of moving around working (apparently time flies much faster this way), I had to stand and guard a coffee station for 12 hours!!! It was hell and my feet were in extreme agony! Standing still seem to be more exertive on your feet than walking around! Soon, another day passed!:)

Saturday:

Yeah, its more or less the same except it was on a larger scale (more than 1,500 guests!!). It was NUH's annual dinner and dance. Luckily, my table guests were friendly nurses and they treated me well with respect! (maybe because they are service providers too so they understand the hell we have to go through everytime we work!) Got home at 12.30am!

Sunday:

Apparently the worse working day of my LIFE!! It was so screwed up!!! Today's event was a school 90th celebration event adn there were a huge bunch of kids, parents, teachers and guests! The guests, firstly, gave me an extremely bad impression of that ''prestigious'' school in Clementi. The kids were arrogant and spoilt brats, their parents were a over-protective of their children lot and extremely arrogant too! I know I enjoy working in the service sector but I really HATE working and serving arrogant bastards!! The kids ran around the place as if they were in a playground and rolling all over the place. They took drinks from the tray you're holding when you're not aware, causing the tray to wobble and nearly collapse and fall, then they stand right in front of you and laugh. That, ladies and gentlemen happened to me and I was thinking whether to laugh at them if I smacked their faces with my metal tray, causing all their brittle little teeth to drop.

A few separate incidents involved me having to serve those bloody young brats drinks. I had to greet them and serve them drinks while they gave me the "get away from me you filthy low-class untermenche (sub-human)" look. If this was a violent society, I would have kicked them in their petit faces, smack them hard with my tray then splash their wounds with a nice cold glass of acidic coke then ask politely," Sir, would you like somemore?" Man, whats wrong with today's kids?! Even those grown up ones, behaved so arrogantly. I mean, being smart isn't useful one bit if one has an emotional quotient of a robot!! If I were president, I would exterminate all arrogant spoilt kids and make the older ones dig holes!!!:)

Okie okie, next problem, I kept forgetting one particular table I had had to serve, so much so that they were lagging behind by two dishes!! A horrible mistake and I got scolded by my coordinator. Luckily, things went smoothly after that. Next mistake (the one which left me feeling depressed the whole day), I dropped my tray onto the floor, infront of the guests. it was extremely embarrassing when people gathered around to look. Some kind souls were nice enough to ask me if I was ok and luckily, my coordinator didn't notice it and I managed to get away with it:) The events happened today was horrible for me, maybe because it was a sunday and I didn't go to church:(... But this certainly gave me second thoughts of working at suntec again. One of my collegues whom I worked with was so problematic that I couldn't work with her and we were quarrelling non-stop! When things went smoothly, she kept bugging me and I wanted to end my life in front of the thousands of guests on stage!!! Maybe the guests won't even notice me cuz im too low-class for them!! In addition, the aunties that day were shockingly fierce and unfriendly, completely opposite of what I thought of them LOL:) I still miss working at the Oriental:....(

Thats about it people! There were many other days Ive worked but these were some of the interesting experiences Id like to share with you all that I will never forget!! And oh Yes, I believe ive created my longest post ever woohoo!!:)

Thats all folks, do take care!!:)
Your host and punisher ( of spoilt brats),
Kovski!!!
